In the Montessori system “Practical Life” is one of the four teaching areas. In that space it is normal to see 4-year-olds cutting carrots with sharp knives.

►What can be done to develop their independence?

1.- Assign tasks according to their age and ability. It's okay that they are difficult. A one year old can drink from a glass. A 3 year old can pour his own glass. The 5 can make flavored water. The 8 can make breakfast. Imagine the 15!

2.- Give it time. Monitor your progress, give support only if you need it.

3.- Let go of perfectionism. If he made the bed, respect how it turned out. It will gradually get better.

4.- Trust and sow trust. "Good work. Did you like how you did it?"

Limiting your independence damages your self-esteem and your sense of personal worth. Help him feel that he can take charge of his life, from an early age.
